Most apples are picked in Autumn between late February and late April every year. They are then stored in large storage sheds, and sent to Market progressively throughout the year.
Sweet apples like the Royal Gala have a high sugar content, and don’t stay as crunchy as we get closer to the end of the year. The high sugar content can cause the apple to be “mealy” (not crisp in other words).
The best apples from now until the end of the year are the Pink Lady, Granny Smith and Jazz varieties. If you do prefer the Royal Gala, best to keep them in the fridge.
