Fresh from the market to your door

News & Updates

We are delivering during the school holidays

June 25, 2022

Hello again everyone,

Deliveries as usual this week, even though it is the first week of the school holidays.

If you are getting away, have a great time!

Not a lot of change at the market, cauliflower a bit cheaper than last week. Hoping broccoli will drop in price as well.

Have a good week.

Cheers,

Michael

Market Update 19 June 2022; Green Oak Lettuce

June 19, 2022

Hi All,

Not much to report from the market, don’t want to sound like a broken down record. Will keep doing my best to bring you the freshest produce we can find in a challenging market.

As they say, “This too will change”, just don’t know when.

We are selling Green Oak lettuce now, it has a soft green leaf, and is cheaper than cos lettuce, and much cheaper than you know what!

Have a great week,

Cheers,

Michael

Deliveries a day later this coming week; Market Update

June 11, 2022

Hi Everyone,

Deliveries will be a day later this coming week due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Usual Tuesday deliveries will be Wednesday (order cut-off Monday 9;30pm);

Usual Wednesday deliveries will be Thursday (order cut-off Tuesday 9:30pm);

Usual Thursday deliveries will be Friday (order cut-off Wednesday 9:30pm).

Regarding prices and availability of vegetables, not much has changed. As I have mentioned in the past, because I am a very small buyer, I should be able to fulfil the orders with everything that is ordered.

Cheers,

Michael

Market Update Sat 4th June 22

June 4, 2022

Spoke to my market contacts yesterday, looks like the higher vegetable prices will be with us for most of the winter. As I said in last week’s update, because we are a small buyer, I’m hoping we will still be able to offer a good range.

No snow peas or sugar snap peas this coming week, they are available, but the quality is very poor. Asian Greens such as Bok Choy and Chinese Broccoli (Gai/Lan) may be better alternatives to use in a stir fry.

Plenty of fruit to choose from, but no strawberries until the Queensland season start in a few weeks. Even when they start, there will be issues with water damage, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Have a good week,

Cheers,

Michael

Rhubarb and Apple Stew; Market Update

May 28, 2022

If you haven’t tried rhubarb before, or haven’t eaten it in a while, then try making Rhubarb and Apple stew topped with a scoop of ice cream or cream (or both). It’s easy to make, and there are plenty of recipes and variations online.

The floods in Queensland have definitely impacted the supply and price of certain fruits and vegetables. Because we are very small, we are not having any difficulties sourcing produce. Rest assured, if you order from us, we will be able to supply.

Have a great week!

Cheers, Michael

Six different potatoes to choose from; No more green grapes

May 21, 2022

Besides the popular white washed and desiree potatoes, we also have Brushed, Kipfler, Dutch Cream and Baby Potatoes. All are in season at the moment.

Green grapes have come to the end of the season, but the red seedless are still available.

Too cold for local strawberries at the moment, and the Queensland variety are still a few weeks away. They have had so much rain in South East Queensland lately, not sure how successful their strawberry season will be. Raspberries are the next best option.

Delivery days are the same as last week, Tuesday to Thursday depending on your suburb.

Have a great week!

Cheers,

Michael

Locally grown produce is the best way to go

May 14, 2022

Weather events, fuel costs and staffing issues for farmers have created a “perfect storm” which is impacting prices.

Just wanted to let you know I’m doing my best to keep the business going, and greatly appreciate your support.

In winter, we Victorians rely on many of our vegetables coming down from Queensland eg Beans, corn, iceberg lettuce, capsicum, zucchinis plus fruits such as bananas, cantaloupe, pineapple and passionfruit.

Best of the local fruits are apples (plenty to choose from), pears and oranges (all grown in Victoria).

Best of the local veggies: Potatoes, carrots, broccoli, broccolini, cauliflower, buk choy, celery, parsnips (all grown in Victoria).

Have a great week,

Cheers,

Michael

Navel oranges now available; Broccoli is good value

May 7, 2022

Locally grown Navel oranges are now available replacing the Valencia variety. Navels are the winter variety, and are more suitable for eating. Valencias are the summer variety, and more suitable for juicing.

Talking about locally grown, Broccoli has reduced in price, and is really good value at the moment. A lot of our vegetables at the moment are grown up north, because it’s getting too cold down here.

The best of the Victorian grown veggies are broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, potatoes, onions and celery. Iceberg lettuce is still in short supply, Cos lettuce is still the best alternative.

All apples now are new season, and there are plenty of varieties to choose from.

Have a great week!

Cheers,

Michael

Cos lettuce a better option to Iceberg; Normal week finally

April 30, 2022

After three short delivery weeks, this coming week your delivery day will be back to “normal”.

Iceberg lettuce spiked in price last week, and the quality dropped off so I have taken it off the online store.

Cos lettuce or salad mix is a better option for salads at the moment.

Nothing new in the fruit section, just the basics. Red grapes are probably better than the green ones, strawberries are still available but a bit on the pricey side.

As the weather cools down, we rely more and more on vegetables coming out of Queensland (zucchini, beans, capsicum, tomatoes and corn).

Best of the local vegetables are broccoli, broccolini and cauliflower.

Have a great week!

Cheers,

Michael

Another short week; Sweet mandarins; Pineapple juice

April 23, 2022

This is the third short week in a row.

Delivery days will be the same as last week, a day later for those that usually get a delivery on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday. Usual Friday deliveries remain on a Friday.

We are heading into citrus season, so hope to have navel oranges very soon.

Until they are available, the best of the citrus is the Imperial Mandarins.

Have a good week!

Cheers,

Michael
