Brussels Sprouts back in season; Easter delivery changes

March 27, 2021

I know they’re not everyone’s favourites, but Baby Brussels sprouts are back in season!

Seems like people either really love them, or really don’t.

Deliveries as usual this coming week, but no deliveries the week after (Tuesday 6th, Wednesday 7th & Thursday 8th April).

Over the last couple of weeks, the quality of the Australian grown Valencia oranges has deteriorated. I will still offer them for sale, probably more suitable for juicing rather than eating.

The Australian Navel variety usually starts about May each year, so still about a month away.

Have a good week,

Cheers,

Michael

Passion Fruit & Parsnips are back in season; Nectarines have finished

March 20, 2021

Passion fruit from Northern NSW is now available. Let’s hope the trucks can get through with all the rain they have had up there.

Parsnips are locally grown, and come in a 400g serve, which is about four small ones.

Plums and the Red Clingstone peaches are still available for another few weeks, green grapes are still excellent quality, and the red ones are the smaller crunchy ones now.

Yellow and White Nectarines are right at the end of the season, so better to avoid them, as the quality starts to be hit and miss.

Have a good week!

Cheers,

Michael

Quince and Pomegranates now in season

March 13, 2021

I am definitely no expert on the quince, which is a cross between an apple and a pear, but shouldn’t be eaten raw, as it is “tough and acidic”.

Once cooked, it releases a “stunning fragrance of sweet vanilla and citrus”, or so the experts say.

More information on Quinces, and a recipe for Quince Paste can be found here

Pomegranates are also available now, grown in Northern NSW.

Again, I’m no expert, but plenty of recipes can be found online.

Enjoy experimenting with quinces and pomegranates!

Have a good week.

Cheers,

Michael

Packham Pears replace the William variety; Sweet Corn is locally grown

March 7, 2021

The Packham Pear is a green pear that ripens slowly, and doesn’t change colour to yellow like the William Pear (which has just finished).

The Packham variety are now in season. Don’t put them in the fridge, and expect them to take up to a week to ripen at this time of the year.

Sweet corn is locally grown at the moment, is super sweet and great quality.

New season Jazz Apples are about two weeks away, new season Pink Lady Apples about four weeks away. The Royal Gala and the Granny Smith Apples are both new season (from Shepparton).

Have a good week!

Cheers,

Michael

New Season Granny Smith Apples; Red Clingstone Peaches

February 28, 2021

New season Granny Smith apples are now available. At the start of the season, Granny Smith apples can be quite sharp or tart, so don’t expect a sweet tasting apple.

Last week, the clingstone peaches were the ‘Red Clingstone” variety. They looked more like a regular yellow peach, but in fact they are a clingstone.

Plums, nectarines, grapes (both red and green) are all still good quality.

Have a good week.

Cheers,

Michael

Nashi Pears & Aussie Garlic now available

February 21, 2021

Australian garlic is very late this year. Usually the grower that I purchase it from has it available in December, but this season, it’s nearly three months late!

Nashi pears are also back on, they are usually available from now, until the end of October.

William pears (the quick ripening variety) will soon be replaced by Packham pears (which at the start of the season take forever to ripen). Will let you know when the change happens.

Have a good week!

Cheers,

Michael

New Season Royal Gala Apples; Clingstone Peaches & Yellow Squash

February 7, 2021

The Royal Gala is the first of the new season apples available.

As the other new season varieties start, they will be added to the online store.

Clingstone peaches replace the regular yellow peaches this week, both colour nectarines are still around, as are both coloured grapes (red and green seedless).

Usually at this time of the year, there are kiwi fruit from Italy. For some reason, they have had a poor season, so looks like we’ll have to wait until the New Zealand kiwis are available.

Have a good week,

Cheers,

Michael

Red Seedless Grapes; Yellow Squash available; New season apples very soon

January 31, 2021

Crunchy red seedless grapes will be available this week, as will 250g punnets of yellow squash.

Green seedless grapes (the Minindee seedless variety) are still available for those that prefer a green grape.

Hope to have new season Royal Gala apples by the end of the week. If not this week, definitely next week.

The Mild Salsa is back in stock, after being unavailable for a couple of months (goes very well with the corn chips).

That’s it from me,

Have a great week!

Cheers,

Michael
