Purple Carrots, new season ginger & grape tomatoes available
Purple carrots date back thousands of years, originating in ancient Persia. As well as having all the health benefits of orange carrots, Purple carrots have the added benefit of being a great source of antioxidants. Enjoy them raw, cooked or juiced.
Ginger has been quite expensive for the last few months. Now that the new season ginger has arrived, it’s finally a bit cheaper.
Finally, the grape tomatoes still have a few more weeks to go. They are grown in the Yarra Valley.
Have a great week!
Cheers, Michael

It’s definitely soup weather
This cold weather is a bit of a shock. We were very lucky to have pretty good weather wherever we went while away. Was sometimes hard to sleep, especially in Orkney where it’s light 24 hours a day. The sun goes down, but not enough to bring on darkness.
Gave some of my suppliers a call from Edinburgh last week for a Melbourne Market update. Sounds like nothing is growing because of the cold weather. It’s even cold in Queensland, with overnight frosts affecting beans and corn.
Definitely soup and winter veg weather, so pumpkin, celery, leeks etc. will be the order of the day. Best fruits at the moment are apples, oranges, mandarins, pears, bananas and kiwi. Sounds a bit boring, but that’s winter for you.
It’s good to be back, have a great week!
Vegetable Lasagne with Silverbeet
Try this easy Vegetable Lasagne with Silverbeet recipe. The only vegetables you need is an onion, couple of carrots, a red capsicum, and a bunch of silverbeet.
Prefer a soup to a lasagne, then this Silverbeet and Potato Soup recipe might be for you?
Silverbeet is also known as Swiss Chard, is available all year round and can be used in soups, frittatas, pies and vegetable dishes.
Baby brussels sprouts taste better!
Our friend the brussels sprout has been much maligned over the years. From my experience talking to people, there seem to be two camps; those that love them, and those that don’t. Not much in between.
Well, the baby brussels sprout is back! If you are in the “I don’t like them camp”, but haven’t tried the baby ones, why not give the family a treat this week. You never know, they may be a big hit.
Leeks are also available this week, not that I am suggesting that it’s soup weather just yet.
New Season small fuji apples now available
Most apples are picked between February and April, and then stored in cool stores for the rest of the year. New season fuji apples are just off the tree, and the ones we have are small, so they are ideal for school lunch boxes. We are still selling pink lady and granny smith apples from last season, and they are surprisingly crunchy. New season gala apples have been available for about a month, but my opinion is that this variety is a bit hit and miss. New season fuji, and the old season pink ladys are the best options.
