It’s harvest time for apples at the moment. New season pink lady, jazz, and fuji apples are now available. Jazz Apples are a cross between Braeburn and Gala meaning they have a distinctive crunch on the outside and juicy, sweet & tangy taste on the inside. Try one and let us know what you think!
It’s that time of the year when the summer fruits start to disappear. That’s right, no more peaches, nectarines and plums. The winter fruits are just starting to be picked: pink lady apples, Queensland imperial mandarins, Australian grown green kiwifruit are all available now.
Green packham pears are also just off the tree, replacing the early season ‘William’ variety which are available from late January until the end of March. Packham pears take a little longer to ripen than William pears, so no need to put them in the fridge.
Our friend the brussels sprout has been much maligned over the years. From my experience talking to people, there seem to be two camps; those that love them, and those that don’t. Not much in between.
Well, the baby brussels sprout is back! If you are in the “I don’t like them camp”, but haven’t tried the baby ones, why not give the family a treat this week. You never know, they may be a big hit.
Leeks are also available this week, not that I am suggesting that it’s soup weather just yet.
Most apples are picked between February and April, and then stored in cool stores for the rest of the year. New season fuji apples are just off the tree, and the ones we have are small, so they are ideal for school lunch boxes. We are still selling pink lady and granny smith apples from last season, and they are surprisingly crunchy. New season gala apples have been available for about a month, but my opinion is that this variety is a bit hit and miss. New season fuji, and the old season pink ladys are the best options.
It’s easy to think that a green orange is unripe, but that’s not the case. Australian oranges available at this time of the year, are the valencia variety. They often have a green tinge to them, which makes them appear to be unripe. The green tinge is a defense mechanism designed to protect the inside of the orange from the harsh summer sun.
Valencia oranges are in season now, and are more suitable for juicing than the navel variety which is the winter orange variety.
I spoke to my suppliers late last week to get an idea as to what fruit and veg is around at the moment. There is plenty of fruit to choose from: New season Royal Gala Apples and William Pears are already available. William Pears tend to ripen up very quickly, and change colour from green to yellow when ready to eat. Keeping them in the fridge will slow down the ripening process on hot days.
Other fruits available this is week include: green seedless grapes, clingstone peaches, nectarines, pineapple, cantaloupe, passionfruit, blueberries, strawberries, bananas, oranges and seedless watermelon.
The holidays are nearly over, time to get back into the fresh and healthy stuff.
Add a splash of colour to your cooking this week, with locally grown glasshouse yellow capsicums from the Yarra Valley.
If you’ve tried and liked our veggie and corn chips from Thomas Chipman, try their “Sweet Chilli Salsa” Potato Chips which are 100% Gluten Free and Certified Organic.
New season local strawberries have only been available for the last couple of weeks. The forecast warmer weather over the weekend and forthcoming week is going to be ideal growing conditions for our local strawberries which are grown in the Yarra Valley.
Just a reminder that our veggie chips (beetroot, sweet potato and mixed root) are processed in Lilydale from Australian grown organic vegetables.
Purple carrots date back thousands of years to the early beginnings of the vegetable we now know and love. These ‘original’ carrots were first cultivated in Afghanistan 5,000 years ago.
We also have three new varieties of corn chips from ‘Thomas Chipman’ in Lilydale. Their corn chips are produced from organic corn and are gluten free.
Those that received an order last week should have received a free 300ml pink lady apple juice sample compliments of Summer Snow Apple Juice in West Gippsland. If you missed out, please send me a text, or drop me an email.
